Sustainable Site Development

"Contributing to strong, vibrant communities"

DGE’s leadership has extensive experience in providing civil engineering solutions for site development projects. They have completed projects ranging in complexity from regional shopping centres and multi-family housing developments to industrial, office building and institutional sites. DGE’s experience leads to smart designs that meet regulatory and project requirements while providing aesthetically pleasing and functional sites.

As a member of the Integrated Design Team consisting of architects, owners, contractors, and specialist engineering consultants, DGE’s leadership provides innovative sustainable site civil engineering designs. Innovative solutions include site specific erosion and sedimentation control strategies, capture of rainwater for re-use, and treatment of sanitary and storm water prior to release from the site. Projects completed include some of Alberta’s first Leed® Certified and Silver buildings through to northern Alberta's first net zero commercial building.

"We've always enjoyed working with Martin and the DGE team. Their enthusiasm and flexibility make them a great team to work with on integrated sustainable design projects."

Eastgate Offices

Manasc Issac Architects looked to DGE to provide our expertise in site grading, stormwater management, site mechanical, utility coordination and construction inspections. Site Design and servicing was challenged by the requirement for incorporating existing asphalt parking areas while providing innovated stormwater Management to achieve LEED® Gold .

McKinney Park Greenroom

Site grading and servicing of the McKinney Park Greenroom was complicated by the need to accommodate movement of the building due to its location on the banks of the North Saskatchewan river in close proximity to an old landfill site and in an area with numerous historical coal mines.

Gilead Labs and Office Space

DGE was selected as the civil engineering consultant for this project based on our experience and expertise in Sustainable Land Development, Stormwater Management, Municipal Servicing and Project Management.

DGE’s role in this successful project included assisting the owner and architect through the City of Edmonton Land Development Application (LDA) approval processes along with the off-site water and sanitary sewer servicing of the site. Site development services included identifying right-or-ways owners, obtaining pipeline and right of way crossing and proximity agreements, design and construction supervision of the site grading, surface improvements, servicing, stormwater management and stormwater pumping system.

Mosaic Centre for Conscious Community and Commerce

The Mosaic Centre is Alberta’s first net-zero commercial building. Innovative initiatives included the use of rainwater harvesting to irrigate on-site gardens to grow vegetables served in the restaurant, a rain garden to mitigate runoff from the site and enhance the landscaping, geothermal heating and electrical solar panels. DGE undertook the civil engineering design and construction survey layout for this ground breaking project.

Yellowhead County Municipal Services Centre - Wildwood AB

Yellowhead County and their prime consultant Alastair Cockburn Architects faced the challenge of providing a state of the art municipal services center on a rural, unserved parcel of land. DGE provided the engineering design, project management, approvals, surveying and construction inspection services for a 1 km extension of an off-site water main adjacent to a high voltage power main, provisions for future truck fill station, site servicing, storm water management, site grading and on-site sanitary sewage system.

Car Dealership

DGE was retained by the Owner’s builder to carry out the civil site design for the 3.25 acre site. This included sanitary and water main servicing from existing municipal mains, as well as site grading and stormwater management with on-site detention in order to restrict site run-off contributions to pre-development rates.

DGE’s role was further extended to include initial topographic survey of the site, in order to establish existing grades and to confirm the limit of area wetlands, legal survey to assist with the subdivision of the lot from the larger parcel, and construction lay-out to set key elevations for rough grading.

Administration Building

Parkland CLASS required a new administrative building on an existing 11 ha school site in the City of Red Deer, in order to provide support services for children and adults with disabilities.

DGE was retained to carry out the initial site survey, and prepare designs for the sanitary sewer and watermain servicing of the site, as well as site grading and stormwater management design.  Servicing options looked at a number of City trunk mains in the vicinity of the site.

Vanier Woods Commercial Site

Vanier Woods, in the City of Red Deer, involved re-development of a residential acreage within an existing residential subdivision into a commercial site to support the larger development area.

DGE was retained by the architect to carry out the site survey (using Mobile Mapping technology), and prepare the site utility servicing design, site grading and stormwater management design to City of Red Deer standards.

DGE also carried out a Traffic Impact Assessment to determine the potential impact of the new commercial traffic on the access road intersection with the arterial road, identify potential conflicts between the site access points and area local roads, and confirm the site access design to accommodate anticipated commercial site design vehicles associated with a gas station.

Eaux Claires

Construction of a phased multifamily site including rezoning, subdivision and road closure.

Russel Metals Manufacturing Facility

Russel Metals purchased two 10 ac+/- lots in Border Industrial Park with the intent to construct a new office and manufacturing facility on the south lot while reserving the north lot for future expansion. Russel Metals looked to DGE to provide overall rough grading for the 20 acres with development of the south 10 acres to accommodate the office/manufacturing facility, metals handling area and storage yard. A Nav Canada Land Use Proposal was required because of the proximity of this site to Edmonton International Airport.
